The Glasgow Colleges Football Association came in to existence in the mid fifties with most of the teams as the name suggests connected with colleges from in and around the Glasgow area. We had teams from Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities, Stow College, Central College of Commerce, Bell College to name but a few. The university teams were mostly teams from the hall of residences. Unfortunately not many records were kept and the early days of the league are quite vague. Initially the home team would book the park and the away team got the referee. That meant if the referee had a good gamei.e. the away team won, then they would get him for all their away games. Quite a few of the referees at the beginning were not qualified and this, as you can imagine, posed a few problems. The league got this all sorted and by the mid seventies it was a lot more organised. We have had many stalwards in the league over the years who, in various positions, kept the league going. The league prides itself in playing the game in a sporting manner and has an excellent disciplinary record. Many of the names who served the GCFA in an official capacity and who spring to mind from yesteryear are Mike Dowds, Ian Penman, David Graham, Gerry McElhill, David Smith and Tony Owens. If there is anyone I have missed out I apologise and will try to rectify that in the future.
